For planters the most important point is to keep the drainage holes open so melting ice can drain. Pressure from ice build up within the planter if the drainage hole is plugged can crack even very durable planters made of resin. Cast stone and terracotta planters can also absorb moisture that can create a crack when it freezes. If you place a few small stones or broken terra cotta inside the planter over the drainage hole before adding soil, it will allow proper drainage in any season.
If a planter is not going to be planted over the winter, it is a good idea to remove the soil turn it upside down and rest it on wooden strips. Covering your planters with a moisture repellent cover after you have taken the above steps would be ideal.
Sutton Place Outdoor Birdbath Fountain
Damage to birdbaths and fountains usually occurs because water collects and then freezes in the basin. For small birdbaths you can turn the basin upside down on the base so it cannot collect water. Also if possible place a wooden strip beneath the base so it cannot freeze to the ground.
