Design 101 - Guest Blogger Sarah Barnard, Eco Chic: Simple Steps for Greener Living

I wish I could say all of my clients came to me asking for earth friendly projects, however the fact of the matter is, many homeowners just aren't entirely sure about committing to an eco-friendly lifestyle. One of the largest obstacles I face in my commitment to healthy, responsible interiors is the resistance I receive from clients. Most folks are just not willing to accept items that don’t fit into their preconceived notions about elegance, luxury or refinement.
Edwin Blue Recylced Cypress ChaiseJust recently, a client came to me, readily voicing their desire to make “responsible choices” with regard to the direction of their design. Yet as the project continued, they progressively de-prioritized the idea of going green. They liked the concrete, glass, and recycled paper countertop options we explored, but fell in love with an exotic marble. They understood the value of a low flow shower head, but selected a more visually appealing model instead, they considered an outdoor deck made from recycled milk cartons (reborn as planks), but couldn’t live without antique limestone for their “old world” villa...Most people today are eco-aware and want to do the right thing, but find as a project moves along that the right thing may not always be “their thing.”
Some homeowners are inclined to go green but are concerned about the long term durability and perceived limited aesthetics surrounding green products. For other clients who initially associate the word "green" with the environmental fringe, it can be a rather difficult sell. Misconceptions that green design means swapping glamour for glum still run rampant. To help the transition go smoothly I try to make it clear that environmentally conscious design does not mean limiting your choices or sacrificing aesthetic. We are not talking about living in a home inundated by egg cartons and recycled tires here. Eco friendly options have come a long way.Artificial Grass for Lawns, Balconies and RooftopsThe idea of going green may feel like an overwhelming process to some. In my opinion, it is important to personally find a comfortable middle ground. Integrating Green design into our lives does not have to be about all or nothing. I believe that it is my responsibility to steer my clients down a greener path, even if for some it is only a very gentle nudge. Like anything new in life, people need time to adjust. And while my clients are getting comfortable with these "new" materials, my design goals remain much the same. I want to indulge my clients, see all of their fantasies realized and create spaces that are comfortable, luxurious and personalized.
Like anything else, it’s all about getting the client on board. Try to focus on the potential health benefits for the client and their family. I have found that sometimes people are more receptive to protecting their children, then saving the planet. There are a number of products that can be specified on a wide range of projects regardless of a clients green inclination or lack there of. These are non-toxic, recycled and/ or recycle-able products that simply have no visual cues that indicate they are "green". Although our clients may not fully appreciate these additions initially, I believe they will come to understand the benefits eventually. Think baby steps;
• Recycled and formaldehyde free composite wood product
• No VOC or Low VOC paints.
• Water based and non toxic stains and sealers.
• Chemical free textiles.
• Organic wool carpets from humanely farmed sources
• FSC certified wood for furniture, cabinetry and building materials
• Instant Hot water systems
• Energy Star Appliances
• A household purification system that filters all water, not just the kitchen sink
• Unbleached organic cotton or bamboo towels and sheets
• Unfragranced laundry products
• Radon home test (see www.radon.com)
Soon style won’t be without substance and that’s an exciting revelation to look forward to. With the constantly growing array of options, it won’t be long until these choices become the standard rather than the exception. I believe that we can cater to our client’s desires and tread lightly on the planet. Leading our clients toward a healthier future has never been easier- glamour included.
