Designer Profile - Steve&James

Dorothy Collection
Steve Pellow & James CaseyFor several years Casey and Pellow had designed and produced furniture for other brand names. “The most exciting thing about designing the first-ever Steve&James collection was starting with a completely blank slate” says James.
Designing smaller scale furnishings for urban living and smaller outdoor spaces was on their minds from the beginning. “I live in a city and I do not know anyone who has a big yard or patio. We wanted the pieces to be comfortable but not cumbersome.”
Fans of traditional French design, the collection blends modern hip style with a classic cachet. “Topping our list of objectives was one very specific goal -- to demonstrate that a design can have mass appeal without being boring. We set out to make traditional furniture that feels modern, that’s comfortable, and have functional furniture that has personality.”

The outdoor sofas, lounge chairs and dining furniture feature muted tones of gray and white with splashes of bold primary colors. They are sized to accommodate today’s smaller scale of living space, with the convenience of having complete dining or lounging sets on an urban balcony or small patio.
High quality was another important resolution. “Steve and I formed a pact in the beginning that we would manufacture a high-quality product for an excellent price, and not try to grasp for “market-researched” rungs on the price ladder.”

And why do all of the collections have a person’s name we asked. ‘’We bandied around a bunch of names for the company, none of which we felt really represented what we were doing, when a friend suggested we call it Steve&James... after we got used to that idea, it seemed obvious that all the other people on the team that are working so hard should get some recognition too… so all the collections are named after different people in our office… with the exception of Dorothy, she's my grandma, and she's the best, so she get's one too!’’
“We are thrilled that our first collection has been met with some phenomenal feedback, and we can’t wait to see where we go next.”
