I'm back with our second outdoor living playlist for all of your balcony entertaining needs! Taking a cue from the post on Tuesday about Famous Balcony Design Styles I went to France, Italy and New Orleans for some music inspiration and what I ended up with with was a mix of jazz, funk and tango. Who needs a balcony? I think I could put this playlist on and pretend I have gorgeous wrought iron balcony to sit on and sip a cup of coffee. Happy balcony living!
Most balconies come in one of two footprints - postage stamp or narrow rectangle. With the narrow rectangle footprint you can often get away with a few more pieces of furniture but even so designing a balcony space requires great restraint and more times than not a commitment to a single purpose.
The balcony alone is an iconic outdoor space but some cities (and one country) are home to the most iconic balconies. Paris, Venice, New Orleans and Malta are the locations that come to my mind first when I think of balconies. Ornate, dainty and petite these famous balconies are undeniably feminine and dripping with romanticism. These outdoor spaces scream to be furnished with equally romantic bistro tables for two.
When we started to pull this week on Balcony Living together there was much discussion about what constitutes a balcony. Photos of terraces and rooftop decks kept sneaking into the mix so we decided it was high time we knew exactly what a balcony is. A balcony is "a platform projecting from the wall of a building, supported by columns or console brackets, and enclosed with a balustrade." Platform is the operative word in that definition and with few exceptions that platform equates into a very small or very long footprint and an iconic outdoor space. We will tackle the design challenges and opportunities of balcony living throughout the week but to get us started some classic balcony inspiration.

Privacy was the goal of two artists who wanted to redefine their three-story brownstone and differentiate their tenant space from their own. Don Statham's eclectic design with an urban vibe was created to fit their lifestyle.
Joanna MoorhouseWe recently sat down with lifestyle writer and magazine editor Denise Bates Enos to get her input on this week’s topic of designing a small outdoor living space.
Michael WeeI had a great conversation with Christine Brun, best known for her column “Small Spaces” published by Creators Syndicate and her book, "Small Space Living". Her take on small spaces for the outdoors is timely as homeowners focus on “right-sizing” their furnishings to make their spaces more intimate and compact.
